US Olympic Qualifying
3.22.2012 – 4.2.2012

The U.S. U-23 squad begins its qualifying campaign on Thursday with 3 games in 5 days. First to face the heavily favored Americans is Cuba, followed by our Northern Neighbors Canada, and finishing the group stage against El Salvador. A few very promising friendly games in the past weeks have shown U.S. fans that Caleb Porter has gotten this team playing some attacking football. A dominating ‘Dos A Cero’ result against Mexico in Dallas earlier this month will be a huge boost in confidence for our boys.

Should we progress, the boys would then travel to Kansas City to play the semi-final on the 30th at the prestigious Livestrong Sporting Park (Where AOKC Does Not Stop). They would then compete in the final on the Monday, April 2nd. Qualification is secured should the United States progress to the final, with that match being for bragging rights only.

Porter has named a very strong team for qualifying as expected, with many players having already made their full national team debut. Brek Shea, Teal Bunbury, Juan Agudelo, Freddy Adu, and Bill Hamid are some players that are already very much in the mix for Jurgen Klinsmann this summer. Here’s the full roster:

GK: Bill Hamid, Sean Johnson
DEF: Perry Kitchen, Ike Opara, Kofi Sarkodie, Zarek Valentin, Jorge Villafaña, Sheanon Williams
MID: Freddy Adu, Joe Corona, Mix Diskerud, Jared Jeffrey, Amobi Okugo, Michael Stephens
FOR: Juan Agudelo, Terrence Boyd, Teal Bunbury, Joe Gyau, Brek Shea, Tony Taylor

Bill Hamid has already proven that he has potential to be a top keeper. Sean Johnson is still relatively unknown in a US kit, but big things are expected from him in Chicago. Zac MacMath not in the team, as he will remain with the Philadelphia Union. Sheanon Williams, Ike Opara, and Perry Kitchen very much staples with their respective MLS teams. Captain Freddy Adu still has much to prove, but some promising performances as of late will be a boost for the team. Mix Diskerud is the TRUTH.

Our attacking dynamic is scary….. Agudelo and Bunbury/Boyd, alongside Brek Shea, Freddy Adu, and Mix will be fun to watch. Perry Kitchen said midweek that Shea has been “unreal” in training thus far. With Diskerud pulling the strings, it’s tough to see us not scoring a flurry of goals in this tournament.
