USMNT v Cuba
Time: 4pm ET
Location: Estadio Pedro Marrero; Havana, Cuba
TV: ESPN2, UniMas
The USMNT prepares for #TheHex by facing Cuba in Havana on Friday, followed by New Zealand in DC next Tuesday. This 4pm ET afternoon kickoff has that ditch-work-early vibe written all over it.
Jurgen Klinsmann begins his second tour of the lovely CONCACAF Hexagonal round of World Cup Qualifying having easily won the group in 2013 with 22 points. How did Mexico finish, you may ask? With 11 points and a gifted World Cup ticket.
Last time the USMNT traveled to Cuba in 2008 during the semi-final round of qualifying, Clint Dempsey stole the headlines with a 40th minute strike to take three points back to the states. The USMNT is 9-1-1 since the first match in 1947, which the US lost. The landscape has changed a bit since.
Here’s the roster:
GK: David Bingham, Ethan Horvath, William Yarbrough
DEF: Steve Birnbaum, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Timmy Chandler, Omar Gonzalez, Fabian Johnson, DeAndre Yedlin
MID: Paul Arriola, Michael Bradley, Lynden Gooch, Perry Kitchen, Sacha Kljestan, Christian Pulisic, Danny Williams
FOR: Jozy Altidore, Julian Green, Jordan Morris, Chris Wondooooooolowski, Bobby Wood
When was the last time you saw a USMNT squad without Howard or Guzan?
It will be interesting to see which combo of Cameron/Brooks/Birnbaum/Besler will line up against Mexico next month, maybe tomorrow will be an indicator.
It would be nice to see Lynden Gooch get his first national team cap after a solid start to the season with Sunderland. Arriola and Pulisic certainly impressed during the semi-final round, so we’ll surely see them involved over the next few games.
Our attacking group seems to be taking great shape heading into the Hex. Julian Green returns with Jordan Morris to bring the youth and speed, while Wood & Jozy bring the finishing.
Of course, all of this is in preparation for our huge Hex opener on November 11th in Columbus. That’s when they need us to bring the noise. We hope to see you all there with your singing voices. #AOTicketGate
Props to those who braved the rough travel conditions and made it to Cuba to support our beloved Yanks. Do us proud.
