USMNT vs. St. Vincent & Grenadines
Date: Friday, September 2nd, 2016
Location: Arnos Vale Stadium; St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Time: 3:30 ET
TV: BeIN Sports
It’s weird to think that the United States men’s national team is in both a “must-win” situation, but also one that can put us in a position to finish first in the current round of World Cup qualifying. Such is the roller coaster that is CONCACAF qualifying!
The Nats travel to the quaint island pair of St. Vincent & the Grenadines and the stadium-light-less Arnos Vale Stadium (that’s why the game is in the afternoon). This is our first trip to the home of the Vincy Heat (which sounds more like a AAA baseball team that a soccer nickname) and the 70th different country the MNT has visited since their first match in 1916 in Sweden.
The USMNT is coming off a mixed performance at this summer’s Copa America Centeranrio. On the one hand Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad finished fourth (the teams best finish at a Copa) and didn’t lose to any teams 7-1 (winky face) whereas the only really convincing performance was a dominate win in Chicago over Costa Rica. As always.. plenty of questions remain for this side.
Captain Clint Dempsey is out with an irregular heart beat with a return for both country and club unknown. Obviously the whole of our #AOFamily is giving our best to Deuce. Jozy Altidore, Jordan Morris, and Bobby Wood will be tasked with finding goals for the men while Jurgen Klinsmann has indicated that Brad Guzan (tonight) and Tim Howard (Tuesday) will split time between the posts.
Welcome back to Sacha Kljestan (who replaced the injured John Brooks) to the MNT fold as well and congrats on a first-time call up for midfielder Caleb Stanko.
We head into the final two games of this qualifying round with a shot to top the group and likely face our friends Mexico in the first game of the Hex round, likely in Columbus. If you didn’t think these games were crucial… think again.
Lastly… if you needed any more hype for this afternoon’s match… check out this match poster SVG put out ahead of the game. WE’RE HYPED!
